They went to kindergarten together, lived in the same village, and rode together on the neighbour's little donkey.
It was longears who fired them with a passion for horses!!
When they got married a few years later, their own horses took them to the church! These were the horses they had bought as they came off the boat from Morocco: majestic stallions bound for the slaughterhouse that a few lucky people saved from their fate. Voyou, a beautiful Isabella color and Pierrot's favourite, and Caballero, the splendid white horse with the long main, so precious to Joëlle.
They made their home in Cheval Blanc (white Horse), a pretty little village in southern France that was prophetically named: it was here that they began their horse breeding venture. They bought five mares of unknown origin and delivered their foals. Later on, the livestock was augmented by more mares with full paperwork.
A young 5-year-old stallion called Perdigon joined the group. He was one of the finest Iberian horses imported to France, and soon became the farm pet. Perdigon had boundless energy, an easy temperament, a floor-length mane, graceful action and a special presence that made him unforgettable.
Three years later, Pierrot and Joëlle were captivated by Zagalote, a 6-year-old cremello stallion bred by Coimbra. This dynamic young horse was an elastic mover, a baroque ideal for covering Perdigon's fillies. The blend proved to be outstanding, producing functional, elegant foals that fulfilled all the criteria of the breed.
The breeding farm now had 35 mares bred by Veiga, Coudeleria nationale, Andrade and Coimbra. Four Stallions and more than 300 colts were sold. Some were entered in competitions, some became performing horses and some were recreational horses, but all were the delight of their owners.
Pierrot and Joëlle had realized their dream. With their sensitivity, they had devised their own blend, painstakingly combining a stallion's qualities with those of a mare to produce, enhance and showcase the essence of the Lusitano horse, the perfect combination of good temper, hard work and elegance. |
